For the first two years of my kundalini awakening, I ran high fevers, experienced periods of intense trembling, lost my appetite, dealt with severe digestive distress, and struggled with extreme nausea. It wreaked havoc on my nervous system and completely altered my sense of reality. Spiritual awakenings can be beautiful, transformative, and deeply healingโbut they can also feel incredibly overwhelming for the body. I learned that firsthand.
Over the years, many of the clients I coached who were going through awakenings reported similar experiences. They described periods of intense emotional and energetic shifts accompanied by symptoms such as insomnia, nausea, temperature fluctuations, emotional heaviness, fatigue, dizziness, and/or feelings of disconnection from reality.
What I didnโt understand at the timeโbut later learned through my studies in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)โis that these ancient systems have recognized for thousands of years that the body, mind, and spirit are deeply interconnected. When energy shifts, the body responds. In Ayurveda, awakening symptoms are often viewed through the lens of dosha imbalancesโVata (air/ether), Pitta (fire), and Kapha (earth/water). In TCM, these symptoms may reflect imbalances in Qi, Yin, Yang, Heat, Dampness, or deficiencies within organ systems such as the Heart, Spleen, Liver, or Kidneys.
Knowledge became power for me, and I began educating myself on how food can become medicine during these transitions. The right foods can help stabilize the nervous system, regulate emotions, replenish depleted energy, and ground the body during periods of profound transformation.
Here are some of the best foods to support your body during different phases of awakening.
Best Foods to Eat During an Awakening When You Feel Hot, Feverish & Have Insomnia
In my experience of coaching people through awakening symptoms, overheating and insomnia are some of the most common signs of excess energetic activation. In both Ayurveda and TCM, feeling overheated, restless, anxious, or unable to sleep is often associated with excess fire energy. Ayurveda would call this aggravated Pitta, while TCM may view it as Heart Fire or Yin deficiency.
The goal is to cool the body, calm the nervous system, and restore hydration and Yin energy.
1. Cucumber
Cucumber is deeply cooling and hydrating. In TCM, it clears excess heat, while Ayurveda uses it to calm Pitta energy. Add cucumber to water, salads, or smoothies to help cool the body naturally.
2. Coconut Water
Coconut water replenishes electrolytes and soothes heat-related symptoms like irritability, dehydration, and restlessness. Itโs especially helpful during intense energetic purging or emotional release.
3. Watermelon
Watermelon cools inflammation, hydrates tissues, and helps calm agitation. TCM considers it excellent for clearing Summer Heat and supporting fluids depleted by stress or insomnia.
4. Leafy Greens
Spinach, romaine, dandelion greens, and arugula help detoxify the liver and reduce internal heat. In spiritual traditions, the liver is often associated with stored anger and frustration, making greens powerful for emotional clearing.
5. Pears
Pears nourish Yin energy in TCM and help relieve dryness, overheating, and restlessness. They are particularly helpful if awakening symptoms include night sweats, dry mouth, or anxious thoughts.
6. Chamomile Tea
Chamomile calms the nervous system and relaxes excess mental activity. Ayurveda sees it as soothing to both Pitta and Vata, making it ideal before sleep.
Foods to Avoid During This Phase
- Excess caffeine
- Alcohol
- Spicy foods
- Fried foods
- Excess garlic and onions
- Sugar overload
These foods intensify heat and can worsen insomnia, anxiety, and irritability.
Best Foods to Eat If You Feel Cold, Depressed & Emotionally Heavy
If your awakening feels emotionally dense, exhausting, or heavy, you may be dealing with low digestive fire in Ayurveda (low Agni) or Yang deficiency in TCM. Symptoms can include sadness, fatigue, low motivation, brain fog, and feeling emotionally โstuck.โ
The goal is to warm the body, stimulate circulation, and strengthen life force energy.
1. Ginger
Ginger is one of the most powerful warming foods in both Ayurveda and TCM. It boosts digestion, circulation, and energy while helping emotional stagnation move through the body.
2. Miso & Mushroom Broth
In TCM, mushrooms strengthen Qi and support vitality, while warm broths help rebuild depleted energy reserves. Add shiitake mushrooms, seaweed, ginger, and tofu for a deeply nourishing meal that comforts both the body and nervous system.
3. Sweet Potatoes
Sweet potatoes provide stable grounding energy and support the Spleen in TCM, which governs nourishment and emotional stability. Their natural sweetness is emotionally comforting without causing blood sugar crashes.
4. Cinnamon
Cinnamon warms the body, improves circulation, and gently stimulates energy flow. It can help lift emotional heaviness and support feelings of warmth and comfort.
5. Oats
Warm oatmeal nourishes the nervous system and stabilizes emotions. Ayurveda especially recommends warm cooked grains during times of emotional depletion because they help anchor scattered energy.
6. Lentils
Lentils are protein-rich, grounding, and strengthening. They help rebuild energy reserves and stabilize mood while supporting digestion.
Helpful Practices During This Phase
- Eat warm foods instead of cold/raw foods
- Drink warm teas
- Avoid skipping meals
- Spend time in sunlight
- Add warming spices like turmeric and black pepper
Best Foods to Eat When You Feel Nauseous & Have Very Little Appetite
Sometimes awakening symptoms hit the digestive system hard. Anxiety, energetic shifts, emotional release, and nervous system overload can create nausea, bloating, or loss of appetite. In Ayurveda, this is often linked to disturbed Vata energy. In TCM, it may involve rebellious Stomach Qi.
Many of my clients are surprised to learn how quickly dietary changes can help stabilize awakening symptoms. These foods soothe digestion gently without overwhelming the body.
1. Rice Congee
Congee is a traditional TCM healing food made from slow-cooked rice. Itโs easy to digest, comforting, and helps restore weakened digestive energy.
2. Bananas
Bananas are gentle on the stomach and help replenish minerals depleted by stress. Their grounding quality can also calm nervous energy.
3. Ginger Tea
Ginger is one of the best remedies for nausea in both Eastern systems. It helps the stomach โsettle downwardโ and reduces digestive discomfort naturally.
4. Applesauce
Cooked apples are easier to digest than raw apples and help regulate digestion gently. Ayurveda often recommends stewed apples during digestive imbalance.
5. Miso Soup
Miso soup contains beneficial probiotics that support gut health while being warm and easy on digestion. TCM values warm broths because they strengthen digestive Qi.
6. Peppermint Tea
Peppermint relaxes digestive tension and relieves nausea, especially when symptoms are connected to stress or emotional overwhelm.
Tips for Supporting Digestion During Awakening
- Eat small meals frequently
- Avoid processed foods
- Limit overeating
- Focus on warm, soft foods
- Eat slowly and mindfully
Best Foods to Eat When You Feel Ungrounded, Dizzy & Disconnected
Many people experiencing spiritual awakenings describe feeling โfloaty,โ disconnected from reality, dizzy, anxious, or unable to focus. Ayurveda would associate this with excessive Vata energy, while TCM may describe it as deficient grounding energy.
The goal is to anchor energy back into the body and stabilize the nervous system. One of the biggest things I learned during my own awakening was that grounding the nervous system is just as important as the spiritual work itself.
1. Root Vegetables
Carrots, beets, potatoes, and parsnips are deeply grounding foods because they grow beneath the earth. In energetic traditions, root vegetables help reconnect people to physical reality and stabilize scattered energy.
2. Avocados
Avocados provide healthy fats that nourish the brain and nervous system. They help create emotional steadiness and sustained energy.
3. Brown Rice
Brown rice is one of the most grounding grains in Ayurveda. It stabilizes blood sugar and calms excessive mental activity.
4. Sesame Seeds
Sesame seeds are highly valued in Ayurveda for calming Vata and strengthening the nervous system. Black sesame seeds in particular are considered deeply nourishing.
5. Dates
Dates replenish depleted energy and provide quick nourishment without overstimulating the body. Theyโre especially helpful after emotional release or exhaustion.
6. Walnuts
Walnuts support brain health, nervous system balance, and emotional resilience. TCM often associates walnuts with Kidney energy and long-term vitality.
Grounding Practices to Pair With These Foods
- Walk barefoot in nature
- Reduce overstimulation and screen time
- Prioritize sleep
- Practice deep breathing
- Eat meals at consistent times
